Why are my HEIC photos rotated in other tools?

HEIC stores orientation as metadata. Tools that ignore it show the photo sideways. This converter reads the orientation and rotates the pixels before placing them on the page.

Does it work on Windows without codecs?

Yes. Decoding happens in the browser page itself, not in Windows, so no HEVC extension is needed.

Live Photos and bursts?

The main still image of each HEIC file is used; the video part of a Live Photo is ignored.

About the formats

HEIC · High Efficiency Image Container · .heic

The default photo format on iPhone and iPad since iOS 11: about half the size of JPG at the same quality, but poorly supported outside Apple devices.

HEIC stores images with the HEVC (H.265) codec; a container can hold several images, such as a Live Photo or burst.
Windows needs a paid HEVC extension to open HEIC files, and many websites and forms refuse them.
iPhone can be set to shoot JPG instead: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible.

The fixed-layout document standard: looks the same on every device and printer, which is why forms, invoices, contracts and reports are shared as PDF.

A PDF can contain vector text, embedded fonts, images, form fields, annotations and digital signatures.
Scanned PDFs are just pictures of pages; they need OCR before the text can be searched or copied.
