Why convert GIF to PDF

GIF is limited to 256 colours and has no place in documents, but a lot of legacy material — logos, charts, instructions — exists only as GIF. A PDF collects them into pages that can be printed, signed and archived.

Each GIF is decoded in your browser and placed on a page; palette images stay crisp because the pixels are embedded exactly. For animations only the first frame is meaningful in a PDF.

About the formats

GIF · Graphics Interchange Format · .gif

A 1987 format limited to 256 colours per frame, still everywhere because it is the only animated image format every app can play.

GIF transparency is all-or-nothing: a pixel is either fully opaque or fully transparent.
Animated GIFs are large — a 10-second clip can be bigger than the same clip as MP4.
The 256-colour palette causes banding in photos; PNG or WebP is better for still images.

PDF · Portable Document Format · .pdf

The fixed-layout document standard: looks the same on every device and printer, which is why forms, invoices, contracts and reports are shared as PDF.

A PDF can contain vector text, embedded fonts, images, form fields, annotations and digital signatures.
Scanned PDFs are just pictures of pages; they need OCR before the text can be searched or copied.
PDF is an open ISO standard (ISO 32000) since 2008.
