Why can’t I open HEIC photos on Windows?

HEIC is Apple’s default camera format and Windows needs a paid codec to read it. Convert to JPG here and the photo opens everywhere.

Does converting lose quality?

Converting to PNG is lossless. JPG and WebP are lossy, but at the default quality (around 90) the difference is invisible. Repeated JPG re-saves do add up, so keep an original.

Is there a limit on how many images I can convert?

No. Drop a whole folder; each image is processed in turn on your device and you can download a ZIP.

How to choose

Which format to convert to: JPG for photos you will share or print, PNG for screenshots, logos and transparency, WebP for websites. AVIF is smaller still but not every app opens it yet.
Getting under an upload limit: Compress Image targets a file size directly. If the image is also far larger than a screen, Resize first — a 1600 px wide photo is plenty for most uses.
