About the format

ZIP · ZIP archive · .zip

The universal archive: several files bundled and compressed into one, opened natively on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android.

ZIP compresses each file separately, so already-compressed files (JPG, MP4) barely shrink.
ZIP supports password protection, but the classic ZipCrypto scheme is weak; AES-256 ZIPs need 7-Zip or WinZip.
A ZIP over 4 GB needs the ZIP64 extension, which very old tools do not read.
