Why convert PDF to EPUB
PDF fixes every character to a spot on a page; EPUB is HTML in a zip that reflows to any screen. For novels, reports, papers and manuals that are mostly text, the reflowable version is far more comfortable on a 6-inch screen and works with dark mode, dictionaries and highlights.
The text layer is analysed into paragraphs and headings; level-1 headings (or level-2 if there are no level-1) become chapters with a navigation TOC, or you can make one chapter per page. Hyphenation at line ends is repaired. The result is a valid EPUB 3 with an NCX for older readers. Images, footnotes and multi-column layouts are not reproduced — for a graphic-heavy PDF, keep the PDF.
How to convert PDF to EPUB
- Drop the PDF.
- Choose automatic chapters (from headings) or one chapter per page.
- Convert and download the .epub — send it to your Kindle, open in Apple Books or sideload to Kobo.
About the formats
PDF · Portable Document Format · .pdf
The fixed-layout document standard: looks the same on every device and printer, which is why forms, invoices, contracts and reports are shared as PDF.
- A PDF can contain vector text, embedded fonts, images, form fields, annotations and digital signatures.
- Scanned PDFs are just pictures of pages; they need OCR before the text can be searched or copied.
- PDF is an open ISO standard (ISO 32000) since 2008.
EPUB · Electronic publication · .epub
The open e-book standard used by Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and most readers — except older Kindles.
- EPUB is reflowable: text adapts to screen size and font settings, unlike PDF.
- EPUB 3 supports audio, video and fixed-layout pages for comics and children’s books.
- Amazon’s Send to Kindle accepts EPUB since 2022, but older Kindles still want MOBI or AZW3.
