Will the photo quality drop?

HEIC and JPG are both lossy, so a conversion re-encodes the image once. At quality 90 the difference is not visible; the JPG will be roughly 1.5–2× the size of the HEIC.

Does it keep the date taken and location?

No. The converted JPG contains only the image — camera metadata such as date, model and GPS location is not carried over, which also means you can share the file without revealing where it was taken. The photo’s orientation is applied to the pixels so it displays upright.

Can I convert many photos at once?

Yes. Drop a whole folder; each file is converted in turn and you can download all of them as a ZIP.

How do I stop my iPhone from shooting HEIC?

Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible switches the camera to JPG. Existing photos stay HEIC until converted.

Why convert HEIC to JPG

iPhones shoot HEIC by default because it halves storage use, but Windows needs a paid codec to open it, most web upload forms reject it, and older Android phones cannot display it. JPG is the format the rest of the world expects.

The HEIC file is decoded with a WebAssembly decoder inside the page, orientation and colour profile are applied, and the pixels are encoded as JPEG at the quality you choose. Nothing is uploaded, so hundreds of holiday photos convert as fast as your device allows.

About the formats

HEIC · High Efficiency Image Container · .heic

The default photo format on iPhone and iPad since iOS 11: about half the size of JPG at the same quality, but poorly supported outside Apple devices.

HEIC stores images with the HEVC (H.265) codec; a container can hold several images, such as a Live Photo or burst.
Windows needs a paid HEVC extension to open HEIC files, and many websites and forms refuse them.
iPhone can be set to shoot JPG instead: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible.

The universal photo format: small files, supported by every device, camera and website, but no transparency and slight quality loss on each save.

JPEG compression discards fine detail the eye rarely notices; quality 80–90 is usually indistinguishable from the original at a fraction of the size.
Re-saving a JPG repeatedly adds generation loss, so keep an original and export copies.
JPG has no alpha channel — transparent areas become white or black when converted from PNG.
