Why convert GIF to MP4

Social platforms convert GIFs to MP4 on upload anyway, and web performance tools flag GIFs as one of the heaviest assets on a page. Converting yourself gives a smaller file with full colour instead of 256-colour banding.

Frames are decoded with their exact timing (GIFs often have variable frame delays), rendered at an even frame rate and encoded as H.264 with dimensions rounded to even numbers as MP4 requires.

About the formats

A 1987 format limited to 256 colours per frame, still everywhere because it is the only animated image format every app can play.

GIF transparency is all-or-nothing: a pixel is either fully opaque or fully transparent.
Animated GIFs are large — a 10-second clip can be bigger than the same clip as MP4.
The 256-colour palette causes banding in photos; PNG or WebP is better for still images.

Google’s web image format: 25–35 % smaller than JPG at the same quality, supports transparency and animation, but not every desktop app can open it.

WebP has both lossy and lossless modes, and both support transparency.
All modern browsers support WebP; older image editors, Windows Photos before 2020 and many print workflows do not.
Right-clicking and saving an image from a website often gives you a WebP file even if the page shows a JPG.

The video format that works everywhere: phones, TVs, browsers, social networks. Normally H.264 video with AAC audio.

MP4 is a container; the codec inside (H.264, HEVC/H.265, AV1) decides what can play it.
H.264 MP4 is the safe choice for uploads and sharing; HEVC MP4 from newer iPhones needs extra codecs on Windows.
The “moov atom” placement decides whether a browser can start playing before the whole file downloads.
