Should I use PNG instead?

For screenshots and graphics with sharp edges, yes — BMP to PNG is lossless and still much smaller than BMP. For photos, JPG.

Are 16-bit and indexed BMPs supported?

Yes, all common BMP variants (1, 4, 8, 16, 24, 32-bit) are decoded.

Is there a size limit?

About the formats

An uncompressed Windows image format from the 1990s: simple and lossless, but files are enormous.

A 12-megapixel BMP is about 36 MB; the same photo as JPG is 2–4 MB.
BMP usually has no transparency and no metadata such as camera settings.

JPEG compression discards fine detail the eye rarely notices; quality 80–90 is usually indistinguishable from the original at a fraction of the size.
Re-saving a JPG repeatedly adds generation loss, so keep an original and export copies.
JPG has no alpha channel — transparent areas become white or black when converted from PNG.
