Why convert BMP to JPG

BMP stores every pixel uncompressed: a 12-megapixel image is 36 MB. JPG compresses the same image to 2–4 MB, which matters for email, cloud storage and upload limits.

BMPs rarely contain transparency; if one does, choose the background color to fill it.

About the formats

BMP · Windows bitmap · .bmp

An uncompressed Windows image format from the 1990s: simple and lossless, but files are enormous.

  • A 12-megapixel BMP is about 36 MB; the same photo as JPG is 2–4 MB.
  • BMP usually has no transparency and no metadata such as camera settings.
  • Still produced by some scanners, screenshot tools and legacy software.

JPG · JPEG image · .jpg

The universal photo format: small files, supported by every device, camera and website, but no transparency and slight quality loss on each save.

  • JPEG compression discards fine detail the eye rarely notices; quality 80–90 is usually indistinguishable from the original at a fraction of the size.
  • Re-saving a JPG repeatedly adds generation loss, so keep an original and export copies.
  • JPG has no alpha channel — transparent areas become white or black when converted from PNG.
