Why convert HEIC to PNG
Converting HEIC to JPG adds a second lossy step. If the image is going into an editor for retouching, a lossless PNG intermediate avoids compounding artefacts. Screenshots saved as HEIC also keep their sharp edges better as PNG.
PNG files are large β typically 5β8Γ the size of the HEIC β so use JPG for sharing and PNG for editing and print work.
How it works
- Drop HEIC file onto the box above, click it to browse, or paste from the clipboard.
- Adjust the options if you need to β the defaults suit most cases.
- Press Convert. The work happens on your device, so speed depends on your computer or phone.
- Download the PNG β individually or all at once.
About the formats
HEIC Β· High Efficiency Image Container Β· .heic
The default photo format on iPhone and iPad since iOS 11: about half the size of JPG at the same quality, but poorly supported outside Apple devices.
- HEIC stores images with the HEVC (H.265) codec; a container can hold several images, such as a Live Photo or burst.
- Windows needs a paid HEVC extension to open HEIC files, and many websites and forms refuse them.
- iPhone can be set to shoot JPG instead: Settings β Camera β Formats β Most Compatible.
PNG Β· Portable Network Graphics Β· .png
Lossless image format with transparency, ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and graphics with sharp edges or text.
- PNG is lossless: every pixel is preserved, which is why photos saved as PNG are 5β10Γ larger than JPG.
- Supports an 8-bit alpha channel, so edges can be partially transparent.
- Most browsers and apps have supported PNG since the late 1990s.
