Why convert PNG to ICO
A favicon.ico that contains 16, 32 and 48 px versions looks sharp in browser tabs, bookmarks and Windows shortcuts alike; a single 512 px PNG scaled down by the browser looks blurry at 16 px.
Each size is resized with high-quality resampling and stored as PNG data inside the ICO container, which every modern browser and Windows version reads. Non-square images are centred on a transparent square first.
How it works
- Drop your files onto the box above, click it to browse, or paste from the clipboard.
- Adjust the options if you need to — the defaults suit most cases.
- Press Convert. The work happens on your device, so speed depends on your computer or phone.
- Download the ICO.
About the formats
PNG · Portable Network Graphics · .png
Lossless image format with transparency, ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and graphics with sharp edges or text.
- PNG is lossless: every pixel is preserved, which is why photos saved as PNG are 5–10× larger than JPG.
- Supports an 8-bit alpha channel, so edges can be partially transparent.
- Most browsers and apps have supported PNG since the late 1990s.
JPG · JPEG image · .jpg
The universal photo format: small files, supported by every device, camera and website, but no transparency and slight quality loss on each save.
- JPEG compression discards fine detail the eye rarely notices; quality 80–90 is usually indistinguishable from the original at a fraction of the size.
- Re-saving a JPG repeatedly adds generation loss, so keep an original and export copies.
- JPG has no alpha channel — transparent areas become white or black when converted from PNG.
SVG · Scalable Vector Graphics · .svg
A vector format described in XML: logos and icons that scale to any size without blur, editable in a text editor.
- SVG has no fixed pixel size; when you convert it to PNG you choose the output dimensions.
- SVG files can contain scripts and external references, which is why some platforms reject uploaded SVGs.
- Browsers render SVG natively; most social networks and office apps still need a PNG.
WebP · WebP image · .webp
Google’s web image format: 25–35 % smaller than JPG at the same quality, supports transparency and animation, but not every desktop app can open it.
- WebP has both lossy and lossless modes, and both support transparency.
- All modern browsers support WebP; older image editors, Windows Photos before 2020 and many print workflows do not.
- Right-clicking and saving an image from a website often gives you a WebP file even if the page shows a JPG.
