Why convert WebP to PNG

Browsers happily serve WebP, but Photoshop before 2022, Windows Photos on older builds, many CMS uploaders and office apps do not accept it. PNG works in all of them and keeps the image lossless.

Lossless WebP converts to PNG with no change at all; lossy WebP is decoded once and stored losslessly, so no new artefacts are introduced. Alpha transparency is preserved either way.

How it works

  1. Drop WebP file onto the box above, click it to browse, or paste from the clipboard.
  2. Check the file list; remove anything you added by mistake.
  3. Press Convert. The work happens on your device, so speed depends on your computer or phone.
  4. Download the PNG — individually or all at once.

About the formats

WebP · WebP image · .webp

Google’s web image format: 25–35 % smaller than JPG at the same quality, supports transparency and animation, but not every desktop app can open it.

  • WebP has both lossy and lossless modes, and both support transparency.
  • All modern browsers support WebP; older image editors, Windows Photos before 2020 and many print workflows do not.
  • Right-clicking and saving an image from a website often gives you a WebP file even if the page shows a JPG.

PNG · Portable Network Graphics · .png

Lossless image format with transparency, ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and graphics with sharp edges or text.

  • PNG is lossless: every pixel is preserved, which is why photos saved as PNG are 5–10× larger than JPG.
  • Supports an 8-bit alpha channel, so edges can be partially transparent.
  • Most browsers and apps have supported PNG since the late 1990s.
