HDR or wide-gamut AVIFs are mapped to standard sRGB, which can soften very bright highlights. Standard AVIFs convert without visible change.

Why convert AVIF to JPG

AVIF gives the smallest files of any common image format, which is why sites serve it — but support outside browsers is thin: Windows needs an extension, many CMSs and marketplaces reject it, and older phones cannot view it.

The AV1 decoder runs as WebAssembly in the page. HDR AVIFs are tone-mapped to standard range when converted to JPG; wide-gamut colours are converted to sRGB.

About the formats

A newer web image format based on the AV1 video codec, smaller than WebP and JPG but still unsupported in many apps and older browsers.

AVIF supports HDR, wide colour gamut, transparency and animation.

The universal photo format: small files, supported by every device, camera and website, but no transparency and slight quality loss on each save.

JPEG compression discards fine detail the eye rarely notices; quality 80–90 is usually indistinguishable from the original at a fraction of the size.
Re-saving a JPG repeatedly adds generation loss, so keep an original and export copies.
JPG has no alpha channel — transparent areas become white or black when converted from PNG.
