Why convert 7Z to ZIP

7z compresses better than ZIP, which is why developers and archivists use it, but macOS, iOS and older Windows versions cannot open it natively. Re-packing to ZIP trades a little size for universal compatibility.

Extraction runs on our server with 7-Zip itself, handling LZMA/LZMA2, BZip2 and encrypted archives (with the password).

About the formats

7Z · 7-Zip archive · .7z

The open archive format of 7-Zip with LZMA compression: usually 30–50 % smaller than ZIP, but needs 7-Zip, Keka or The Unarchiver to open.

7Z uses AES-256 encryption and can encrypt file names too.
Solid compression packs similar files together, which is why 7Z beats ZIP on many small files.
Windows 11 (23H2) added native 7Z extraction; earlier versions need 7-Zip.

The universal archive: several files bundled and compressed into one, opened natively on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android.

ZIP compresses each file separately, so already-compressed files (JPG, MP4) barely shrink.
ZIP supports password protection, but the classic ZipCrypto scheme is weak; AES-256 ZIPs need 7-Zip or WinZip.
A ZIP over 4 GB needs the ZIP64 extension, which very old tools do not read.
