Why convert RAR to ZIP

RAR is proprietary; creating it requires WinRAR, and opening it requires extra software on every platform. ZIP is built into every operating system, so re-packing removes the obstacle for whoever you share with.

The archive is extracted with the licensed unrar library on our server and re-packed as a standard ZIP. Folder structure, timestamps and file names with Unicode characters are preserved.

How it works

  1. Drop RAR file onto the box above, click it to browse, or paste from the clipboard.
  2. Adjust the options if you need to — the defaults suit most cases.
  3. Press Convert. The file is uploaded securely, converted, and the result is offered for download.
  4. Download the ZIP.

About the formats

RAR · RAR archive · .rar

A proprietary archive format with better compression and recovery records than ZIP, but Windows, macOS and phones cannot open it without extra software.

  • Only WinRAR can create RAR files; extraction is licensed freely to tools like 7-Zip and unrar.
  • RAR5 (2013) archives cannot be opened by older RAR tools.
  • Converting RAR to ZIP lets anyone open the contents without installing anything.

ZIP · ZIP archive · .zip

The universal archive: several files bundled and compressed into one, opened natively on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android.

  • ZIP compresses each file separately, so already-compressed files (JPG, MP4) barely shrink.
  • ZIP supports password protection, but the classic ZipCrypto scheme is weak; AES-256 ZIPs need 7-Zip or WinZip.
  • A ZIP over 4 GB needs the ZIP64 extension, which very old tools do not read.
