How to play
Choose a generation, pick a timer or leave it off, and press Start. Type names in any order; as soon as a name is complete it jumps into the grid at its Pokédex number, the box clears and the counter goes up. When you run dry, press Give up to reveal everything you missed, grouped by generation. Your best score per generation stays in your browser so you can come back and beat it.
The quiz is text only: no pictures, no silhouettes and no multiple choice, so it is a pure recall test. If you want a gentler warm-up, switch to “Guess the type”, where the name is given and you click its type or types.
Tips for a higher score
- Go in Pokédex order first. Starters, then the early-route bugs and birds, then the rest of the route. Evolution lines come in runs of two or three, so one name usually pulls the next ones with it.
- Then sweep by type. When the order runs out, think of every Water type, every Ghost, every Dragon. Gaps in the grid show you roughly where a missing line sits.
- Use the grid numbers. A single empty box between two found ones is almost always the middle stage of an evolution line.
- Remember the odd ones out. Fossils, the trade-only evolutions, the single-stage Pokémon and the legendaries at the end of each generation are the ones most people forget.
- Do not fight the spelling. Punctuation is ignored, so skip the apostrophes, periods and hyphens and keep typing.
How many Pokémon there are in each generation
The National Pokédex has 1,025 species across nine generations. The numbers in the quiz follow this split:
| Generation | Region | Pokédex numbers | New Pokémon | First games (Japan) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gen 1 | Kanto | 1–151 | 151 | Red and Green (1996) |
| Gen 2 | Johto | 152–251 | 100 | Gold and Silver (1999) |
| Gen 3 | Hoenn | 252–386 | 135 | Ruby and Sapphire (2002) |
| Gen 4 | Sinnoh | 387–493 | 107 | Diamond and Pearl (2006) |
| Gen 5 | Unova | 494–649 | 156 | Black and White (2010) |
| Gen 6 | Kalos | 650–721 | 72 | X and Y (2013) |
| Gen 7 | Alola | 722–809 | 88 | Sun and Moon (2016) |
| Gen 8 | Galar | 810–905 | 96 | Sword and Shield (2019) |
| Gen 9 | Paldea | 906–1,025 | 120 | Scarlet and Violet (2022) |

Thirty years of Pokémon
The first games, Pocket Monsters Red and Green, came out in Japan on February 27, 1996 with 151 Pokémon. Thirty years and eight more generations later the count stands at 1,025, which is why “name all 151” is the classic challenge and “name them all” is the endurance version. The anniversary year 2026 is a good excuse to find out how much of the list is still in your head.
Once you know the names, test the next layer: the Pokémon type chart and weakness calculator shows what every type and dual type is weak to, and the random Pokémon generator rolls a team of six to build around or to draw.
