How is the date of Memorial Day determined?

Memorial Day is the last Monday of May, a rule set by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act (in force since 1971). It can fall on any date from May 25 to May 31 — this page computes the correct Monday for the next occurrence automatically.

What’s the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day?

Memorial Day (last Monday of May) honors those who died in military service; Veterans Day (November 11) honors everyone who has served, living or dead. That’s why “Happy Memorial Day” strikes some as off-key while thanking living veterans belongs on November 11.

Is Memorial Day always a three-day weekend?

For federal employees and most workplaces, yes — since the holiday is defined as a Monday, it automatically creates a Saturday-to-Monday weekend. That was the explicit goal of the 1968 law that moved it.

Why was Memorial Day moved from May 30?

Congress moved it in 1968 to guarantee a long weekend, along with Washington’s Birthday, Columbus Day and Veterans Day (the last was later moved back). Veterans’ groups objected to detaching the day from May 30, and bills to restore the fixed date have been introduced ever since — none has passed.

From Decoration Day to the last Monday of May

Memorial Day honors US service members who died in military service. It began after the Civil War as Decoration Day, observed on May 30 regardless of weekday. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 (effective 1971) moved it to the last Monday of May — one of four holidays shifted to Mondays specifically to create three-day weekends.

The last-Monday rule places it between May 25 and May 31; the exact date depends on which weekday May 31 happens to be. The calculator above resolves the rule for whichever year is next. At 3:00 pm local time on the day, the National Moment of Remembrance invites a minute of silence.

The unofficial gate to summer

Memorial Day weekend is the traditional start of American summer: pools open, beach towns switch to high season, and roughly the same travel crush as July 4th hits the highways — leaving Thursday evening or early Saturday beats the Friday peak. It’s also one of the year’s big sale weekends for mattresses, appliances and grills. If you’re counting down to a summer trip, Memorial Day is the checkpoint: lodging for the whole season books noticeably faster after this weekend.
