How Election Day is set
Federal Election Day is fixed by an 1845 law as “the Tuesday next after the first Monday in November” in even-numbered years. That is why it falls between November 2 and November 8 and never on November 1. In 2026 the first Monday is November 2, so Election Day is Tuesday, November 3; in 2028 it is November 7.
The 2026 midterms decide all 435 House seats, 35 of the 100 Senate seats and 36 governorships, plus state legislatures and ballot measures. The countdown targets the federal date; some states hold primaries, runoffs or local elections on other days — check your state election office for those.
