How many days until Election Day 2026?

The counter above computes it live from today’s date to Tuesday, November 3, 2026. After that date it automatically counts down to the next federal election on November 7, 2028.

Why is Election Day always a Tuesday in early November?

An 1845 federal law set it as the Tuesday after the first Monday in November so that farmers could travel to the county seat after Sunday worship and still be home for Wednesday market day. The rule has never changed, so the date moves between November 2 and 8.

Is Election Day a federal holiday?

No. Some states (for example New York, Illinois and Hawaii) make it a state holiday or require employers to give paid time off to vote, but there is no national holiday. Polls are open long hours, and most states have early voting.

When is the voter registration deadline?

It depends on the state: as early as 30 days before Election Day (about October 4, 2026) and as late as Election Day itself where same-day registration exists. Vote.gov lists every state’s deadline and lets you register online where that is allowed.

How Election Day is set

Federal Election Day is fixed by an 1845 law as “the Tuesday next after the first Monday in November” in even-numbered years. That is why it falls between November 2 and November 8 and never on November 1. In 2026 the first Monday is November 2, so Election Day is Tuesday, November 3; in 2028 it is November 7.

The 2026 midterms decide all 435 House seats, 35 of the 100 Senate seats and 36 governorships, plus state legislatures and ballot measures. The countdown targets the federal date; some states hold primaries, runoffs or local elections on other days — check your state election office for those.

Deadlines that come before the countdown hits zero

Voter-registration deadlines fall 8–30 days before Election Day in most states (about October 5–26, 2026), while 20-plus states plus DC allow same-day registration. Mail-ballot request deadlines are typically 7–11 days out, and early in-person voting opens 1–6 weeks before November 3 depending on the state. Overseas and military voters should request ballots by early October. The safe rule: register or update your address by the end of September.
