Long weekends in 2026

8 of the 2026 holidays are observed on a Monday or Friday, giving an automatic three-day weekend: MLK Day (Mon, Jan 19), Presidents' Day (Mon, Feb 16), Memorial Day (Mon, May 25), Juneteenth National Independence Day (Fri, Jun 19), Independence Day (Fri, Jul 3), Labor Day (Mon, Sep 7), Columbus Day (Mon, Oct 12), Christmas Day (Fri, Dec 25). Thanksgiving Thursday plus the Friday most employers give off makes a four-day weekend, and Christmas and New Year’s Day fall a week apart, so five vacation days between them can buy up to 12 consecutive days off.

How the dates are set

Federal holidays are listed in 5 U.S.C. § 6103. Five are fixed dates (January 1, June 19, July 4, November 11 and December 25); the rest are “floating” Mondays or Thursdays so they always create a long weekend. When a fixed-date holiday falls on a Saturday, federal employees observe it on the preceding Friday; on a Sunday, the following Monday. Columbus Day is also marked as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in many states and cities, and several states do not observe it at all.
