Why is the GIF bigger than the WebP?

GIF is far less efficient than WebP — 3–10× larger is normal. Reduce the width or colours if size matters, or use WebP to MP4 for video-capable apps.

Does it work in Firefox?

Firefox does not yet expose the ImageDecoder API needed for animated WebP frames; use Chrome, Edge or Safari 16.4+.

Is a still WebP converted too?

Yes — you get a single-frame GIF; for still images WebP to PNG or JPG gives better quality.

Is the file uploaded?

Why convert WebP to GIF

Animated WebP is smaller and higher quality than GIF, but support is uneven outside browsers. GIF is understood by everything from 1990s software to every messaging app, which is why a conversion is sometimes the only way to share the animation.

The browser decodes each WebP frame with its own timing through the ImageDecoder API (Chrome, Edge, Safari 16.4+), scales it and re-quantises it to an optimised 256-colour palette per frame. Transparent areas are kept where GIF allows.

Google’s web image format: 25–35 % smaller than JPG at the same quality, supports transparency and animation, but not every desktop app can open it.

WebP has both lossy and lossless modes, and both support transparency.
All modern browsers support WebP; older image editors, Windows Photos before 2020 and many print workflows do not.
Right-clicking and saving an image from a website often gives you a WebP file even if the page shows a JPG.

A 1987 format limited to 256 colours per frame, still everywhere because it is the only animated image format every app can play.

GIF transparency is all-or-nothing: a pixel is either fully opaque or fully transparent.
Animated GIFs are large — a 10-second clip can be bigger than the same clip as MP4.
The 256-colour palette causes banding in photos; PNG or WebP is better for still images.
