Why does my Amazon book fail to convert?

Books bought from the Kindle store carry DRM. They are encrypted and cannot be converted; only DRM-free files work.

Will the cover show in Apple Books?

Yes, the cover image is embedded as the EPUB cover.

Can I convert KFX files?

No. KFX is Amazon’s newest DRM-wrapped format and is not supported.

Why convert MOBI to EPUB

MOBI is discontinued and AZW3 is Kindle-only; EPUB is the open standard supported by every reader except Kindle. Converting keeps chapters, images, cover and metadata so the book behaves normally in your new app.

Conversion runs with Calibre on our server. Formatting in AZW3 (KF8) translates well to EPUB 3; classic MOBI has less formatting to begin with and converts cleanly.

About the formats

MOBI · Mobipocket e-book · .mobi

The older Kindle format, discontinued by Amazon in 2022 but still the only option for pre-2012 Kindles and some readers.

MOBI has limited formatting compared with EPUB: no CSS floats, limited tables, no embedded fonts.
Amazon replaced MOBI with AZW3/KF8 and now KFX.
Converting EPUB to MOBI works well for novels; complex layouts lose fidelity.

AZW3 · Kindle Format 8 · .azw3

Amazon’s Kindle format from 2011 onwards, based on EPUB 3 features with DRM support; opens only in Kindle apps and devices.

AZW3 supports embedded fonts, CSS3 and fixed layouts, unlike MOBI.
Files bought from Amazon are DRM-protected and cannot be converted.
Sideloaded AZW3 files without DRM convert cleanly to EPUB.

The open e-book standard used by Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and most readers — except older Kindles.

EPUB is reflowable: text adapts to screen size and font settings, unlike PDF.
EPUB 3 supports audio, video and fixed-layout pages for comics and children’s books.
Amazon’s Send to Kindle accepts EPUB since 2022, but older Kindles still want MOBI or AZW3.
