Convert each class grade to points on the 4.0 scale (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0, with + and − steps of 0.3), add them up and divide by the number of classes. Middle schools rarely use credit hours, so every class counts equally: an A (4.0), B+ (3.3), A− (3.7), B (3.0) and A (4.0) average to 18.0 ÷ 5 = 3.60.

The most common US scale is 90–100 = A, 80–89 = B, 70–79 = C, 60–69 = D and below 60 = F, with pluses and minuses at the top and bottom of each band (93–96 = A, 90–92 = A−, 87–89 = B+ and so on). A 3.5 or higher (mostly A’s and some B’s) is strong and usually qualifies for honor roll; 3.0 is a solid B average. More useful than the number is the habit: students who keep a 3.5+ in 7th and 8th grade generally land in honors-track high school classes, which is where weighted GPA starts to count.
