The cumulative GPA formula

new cumulative GPA = (current GPA × credits so far + Σ new grade points × credits) ÷ (credits so far + new credits)

needed semester GPA = (target GPA × total credits − current GPA × credits so far) ÷ new credits

Worked example: 3.42 over 45 credits is 153.9 grade points. This semester: Organic Chemistry B (3.0 × 4 = 12.0), Statistics A− (3.7 × 3 = 11.1), Writing Seminar A (4.0 × 3 = 12.0), Psychology B+ (3.3 × 3 = 9.9) — 45.0 points over 13 credits, a 3.46 semester. New cumulative: 198.9 ÷ 58 = 3.43. Reaching 3.50 this term would have required a 3.78 semester.
