Weighted GPA Calculator

Convert each grade to 4.0-scale points, add the course bonus — usually +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB or dual-enrollment — multiply by credits, and divide by total credits. An A− in AP Biology is 3.7 + 1.0 = 4.7 points; a B+ in Honors English is 3.3 + 0.5 = 3.8. With an A in Algebra II (4.0) and a B in US History (3.0), the weighted GPA is (4.7 + 3.8 + 4.0 + 3.0) ÷ 4 = 3.88 versus 3.50 unweighted.

On the 5.0 scale, 4.0 or above means mostly A’s and B’s in advanced classes and puts you in a strong position for selective colleges; 4.5+ is typical of top-10 % students at schools with many AP offerings. Because weighting varies so much by school, admissions officers usually look at the unweighted GPA plus course rigor rather than the weighted number alone.

Not with the common +1.0 scheme, where a 5.0 requires straight A’s in all-AP classes. Some schools weight on a 6.0 scale or give A+ 4.3, so a transcript can show numbers above 5.0 — and some cap the bonus so that only a limited number of weighted courses count each year.

Most recalculate. Common practice is to strip the school’s weighting, convert to a 4.0 unweighted GPA using only core academic classes, and judge rigor separately from the course list. Some state universities (for example the University of California) apply their own capped weighting. Report both numbers when an application asks, and let the college do its own math.

Typically Honors, AP, IB Higher Level and dual-enrollment college courses. Some schools also weight IB Standard Level, pre-AP or gifted classes at +0.5. Electives such as PE and art are almost never weighted. Use the scheme selector to match your school, and check the student handbook if unsure.
