Will my layout be exactly like Word?

In almost all documents, yes. Documents that rely on fonts not embedded or available (custom corporate fonts) may show substituted fonts with the same metrics, so line breaks stay the same.

Are comments and tracked changes included?

Tracked changes are shown as accepted; comments are not printed. Accept or reject changes in Word first if you need a specific state.

Is my document private?

The file is sent over HTTPS to our server for conversion, is never read by anyone, and is deleted automatically within one hour. If you prefer not to upload, Word itself can export PDF via File → Save As.

Does it handle .doc from Word 2003?

Yes, both DOC and DOCX are accepted.

Why convert Word (DOCX) to PDF

A DOCX reflows depending on the fonts and Word version on the recipient’s machine. Converting to PDF locks the layout so a CV, thesis or contract appears identical on every screen and printer.

Conversion runs on our server with a full office engine and a large font library, which is what preserves numbered lists, table of contents fields, tracked changes (accepted) and embedded charts. Missing fonts are substituted with metric-compatible ones so pagination holds.

About the formats

Word (DOCX) · Microsoft Word document · .docx

The current Word format (since 2007): a ZIP of XML files that Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages can all open and edit.

DOCX layout depends on the fonts installed on the viewing computer, which is why the same file can paginate differently on another machine.
Converting to PDF freezes the layout so it looks the same everywhere.
DOCX is part of the Office Open XML standard (ISO 29500).

Word 97–2003 (DOC) · Legacy Microsoft Word document · .doc

The binary Word format used from 1997 to 2003; still opens in Word, but many web apps and phones cannot read it.

DOC files are binary, not XML, so they cannot be inspected or repaired as easily as DOCX.
Google Docs converts DOC on upload; Word opens it in Compatibility Mode.
Macros can live inside DOC files, so some email systems block them.

The fixed-layout document standard: looks the same on every device and printer, which is why forms, invoices, contracts and reports are shared as PDF.

A PDF can contain vector text, embedded fonts, images, form fields, annotations and digital signatures.
Scanned PDFs are just pictures of pages; they need OCR before the text can be searched or copied.
PDF is an open ISO standard (ISO 32000) since 2008.
