Waist-to-hip ratio
| WHR | 0.85 |
The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) shows how fat is distributed around your body, and in particular how much has gathered around the abdomen. Belly fat carries the greatest health risk, so WHR is a useful complement to what body mass index tells you.
How the calculator works and what it’s for▾
How the ratio is calculated
WHR is found by dividing your waist circumference by your hip circumference. Both are measured in centimetres, and the result is a unitless number.
For example, an 85 cm waist and a 100 cm hip give a ratio of 0.85. The higher the number, the more fat sits around the midsection relative to the hips.
How to interpret the result
Health risk rises once the value passes 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women. Below these thresholds the fat distribution is generally more favourable.
WHR does not measure your total body fat percentage but where the fat is located. An apple shape (fat on the belly) is linked to higher risk than a pear shape (fat on the hips and thighs).
How to measure correctly
Measure your waist at navel level while standing relaxed; do not pull the tape tight. Breathe naturally and avoid sucking in your stomach.
Measure your hips at their widest point, around the buttocks. Take measurements in the morning under consistent conditions so that tracking stays comparable.
Good to know
WHR is an indicative measure, not a medical diagnosis. For a very muscular or unusually built person the result can be skewed.
If the value is elevated, focus on reducing abdominal fat through exercise and diet. When in doubt, consult a healthcare professional.
