How much does a baby sleep per day?

A newborn sleeps about 14–17 hours a day, divided into several periods. The need for sleep decreases gradually with age, down to about 10 hours by school age.

When does a baby sleep through the night?

Many babies start sleeping longer stretches at night between 4 and 6 months, but waking at night is completely normal for much longer too. Every child develops at their own pace.

Naps decrease gradually. Most children give up napping between the ages of 3 and 5, but some need them for longer. A rest break can still be beneficial.

What if my child sleeps less than recommended?

Sleep needs are individual. If the child is alert, cheerful and developing normally, slightly below-average sleep may be enough. Persistent tiredness is worth raising at the child health clinic.
