Why convert MP3 to OGG

OGG is the container that game engines and open-source software standardise on: royalty-free, loops without the gap MP3 adds at the start and end, and small at the bitrates games use. If an engine rejects your MP3, this is usually the reason.

The MP3 is decoded in your browser and re-encoded with the Opus codec inside an OGG container — the modern Ogg codec that every current engine, browser and player reads. Bitrates of 64–96 kbps match a 192 kbps MP3 for most content.

How to convert MP3 to OGG

  1. Drop the MP3 files onto the page.
  2. Choose a bitrate — 96 kbps for music, 48 kbps for effects and voice.
  3. Click Convert and download the OGG files.

About the formats

MP3 · MPEG-1 Audio Layer III · .mp3

The audio format everything can play: cars, phones, old players, websites. Lossy, but at 192–320 kbps close to indistinguishable from CD.

  • All MP3 patents expired in 2017; the format is now free to use.
  • 128 kbps is the classic “good enough” rate; 320 kbps is the maximum.
  • MP3 cannot store multichannel surround or lossless audio.

OGG · Ogg Vorbis / Opus audio · .ogg

The open-source audio container used by games, Wikipedia, Spotify streams and WhatsApp voice notes (Opus); not supported by Apple apps.

  • Ogg is a container; the codec inside is usually Vorbis (music) or Opus (voice, low bitrate).
  • Opus is the codec behind WhatsApp voice messages, Discord and WebRTC calls.
  • iOS and iTunes do not play OGG natively, which is the usual reason to convert to MP3.
