1430 military time is

2:30 PM

Spoken: “fourteen thirty hours”

📌 Military time always uses four digits and no colon: 9:00 AM is written 0900, not 900 or 9:00. Midnight is 0000 at the start of a day; 2400 is only used to mark the end of a day (for example “open until 2400”) and refers to the same moment as 0000 of the next day.

How military time works

Military time runs from 0000 to 2359: the day starts at 0000 (midnight), the hours count straight up through 1200 (noon) and keep going — 1300 for 1:00 PM, 1800 for 6:00 PM, 2300 for 11:00 PM. To convert to standard time, any hour of 1300 or more loses 12 and becomes PM; hours below 1200 keep their number and become AM. Times are written as four digits with no colon, so 7:05 AM is 0705, and minutes convert unchanged — 1445 is 2:45 PM.

The only tricky spot is midnight. The start of a day is 0000, and the first hour of the day runs 0000–0059 (12:30 AM is 0030). The notation 2400 exists too, but only as the end of a day: 2400 on Tuesday and 0000 on Wednesday are the same instant. Timetables prefer 0000 or 2359 so a time never points at two different days.

Convert military time to standard time in three steps

  1. Split the four digits into hours and minutes: 1730 is 17 hours and 30 minutes. The minutes never change.
  2. Fix the hour. 13 through 23: subtract 12 and write PM (17 − 12 = 5, so 5:30 PM). 12: keep it and write PM. 00: write 12 and AM. 01 through 11: keep the number and write AM.
  3. Put the colon back and drop a leading zero: 0905 becomes 9:05 AM, 2145 becomes 9:45 PM, 0015 becomes 12:15 AM.

Standard to military works in reverse: for PM times other than 12 add 12 to the hour (4:20 PM is 1620), write 12 AM as 00 (12:40 AM is 0040), keep 12 PM as 12, then remove the colon and pad to four digits (7:05 AM is 0705). Say it as two pairs of digits, with “hundred” for a whole hour: 0700 is “oh seven hundred”, 1530 is “fifteen thirty”.

Who uses it — and related tools

The 24-hour clock is standard wherever an AM/PM mix-up is costly: the armed forces, hospitals and nursing (medication charts), aviation and rail, emergency dispatch, and most of the world outside the US in everyday life. If you are coordinating across regions, the time zone converter converts a time between cities, and the time calculator adds and subtracts hours and minutes — handy for shift lengths and flight times.
