The hourly to salary formula

annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × weeks per year
hourly rate = annual salary ÷ 2,080 (full time)

Worked example: $22.50 an hour × 40 hours × 52 weeks = $46,800 a year, which is $3,900 a month, $1,800 biweekly, $900 a week and $180 for an 8-hour day. Working 30 hours a week instead gives $35,100; two unpaid weeks at 40 hours give $45,000.

Annual pay is hours per week × 52 weeks × rate, so 30 hours a week earns exactly three quarters of a 40-hour salary. Under the Affordable Care Act, 30 hours a week counts as full time for employer health coverage at companies with 50 or more employees, which is why many part-time schedules stop at 29.

Gross vs. take-home: FICA comes out first

Every W-2 paycheck loses 7.65% to FICA before income tax: 6.2% for Social Security (up to the annual wage base) and 1.45% for Medicare (no cap). Federal income tax, state income tax where it applies, and pre-tax deductions such as a 401(k) or health premiums come out after that. The table shows the FICA step only; for a single filer at these wages, take-home pay usually lands between 75% and 82% of gross.
