How the conversion works
Torque is force times lever length. A foot-pound is one pound of force on a one-foot lever; a Newton-metre is one newton on a one-metre lever. Since a pound-force is 4.448 N and a foot is 0.3048 m, one ft-lb equals 4.448 × 0.3048 = 1.3558 Nm. Example: a wheel-nut spec of 80 ft-lb is 80 × 1.3558 = 108.5 Nm; set a Nm wrench to 108 or 109.
Reverse direction: Nm to ft-lbs. Other measurements: unit converter.
