Real return tells you what your investment actually earns once inflation is stripped out. This real return calculator turns your nominal return and inflation rate into both an exact and a rough estimate of how your purchasing power truly grows.
How the calculator works and what it’s for▾
How real return is calculated
The exact real return uses the formula (1+nominal)/(1+inflation)−1. For example, a 7% nominal return with 2% inflation gives a real return of about 4.9%.
The rough estimate is simply nominal minus inflation. It stays close to the exact figure when the percentages are small and is often good enough for a quick read.
What you enter and what you get
You enter two percentages: the nominal return of your investment and the expected or actual inflation over the same period.
The calculator returns the exact real return from the formula and the rough estimate as a difference, so you can also see how far the two diverge.
Why real return matters
A nominal return alone paints too rosy a picture because it ignores the erosion of purchasing power. Only the real return shows how much your wealth genuinely grows.
It is especially worth watching for long-term investments and retirement savings, where inflation has years to eat into your gains.
Interpretation and tips
If the real return is negative, your investment's purchasing power is actually shrinking, even if its dollar value rises.
Use a realistic inflation figure, and remember that taxes and fees reduce your return further on top of this calculation.
