Percent off in your head
Every percent-off problem is one multiplication: sale price = original × (1 − discount). Two shortcuts cover most store signs. Ten percent is the price with the decimal point moved one place left ($47.99 → about $4.80), and every other common discount is a multiple of it: 20 % is twice that, 30 % three times, 5 % half. And a discount of X % means you pay (100 − X) %: 40 % off means you pay 60 %, so $50 becomes $30.
Worked example: $80 item, 25 % off → saving $80 × 0.25 = $20 → sale price $60. With 8 % sales tax the till shows $64.80. Reverse check: ($80 − $60) ÷ $80 = 25 % off.
