Are navigation menus and ads included?

When converting from a URL, the main article region is extracted first; menus, footers and ads are dropped where they can be identified.

Why convert HTML to Word (DOCX)

Web content is easy to read but awkward to edit collaboratively; Word remains the shared editing tool in most organisations. Converting the HTML keeps headings, lists, tables and links as native Word elements rather than a pasted mess.

Rendering happens on our server with an office engine that understands CSS well enough to map fonts, alignment and table borders sensibly. Images referenced by absolute URL are fetched and embedded.

About the formats

HTML · HyperText Markup Language · .html

The language of web pages: text with tags for headings, links, images and tables, rendered by a browser.

An HTML file often references external CSS and images; converting it to PDF works best when they are embedded or online.
Saved web pages may include scripts that behave differently offline.
Semantic HTML (headings, lists, tables) converts cleanly to Word and PDF; layout built from nested divs does not.

The current Word format (since 2007): a ZIP of XML files that Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages can all open and edit.

DOCX layout depends on the fonts installed on the viewing computer, which is why the same file can paginate differently on another machine.
Converting to PDF freezes the layout so it looks the same everywhere.
DOCX is part of the Office Open XML standard (ISO 29500).
